World Rainforest Week at Hill City AquaZoo: Explore, Learn & Discover Rainforest Wildlife!
Rainforests are some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth—and during World Rainforest Week, October 12–18, 2026, Hill City AquaZoo is giving families even more opportunities to learn about the incredible animals that call these habitats home!

Throughout the week, guests can explore rainforest wildlife, participate in special educational activities, discover fascinating animal adaptations, and learn why rainforests are so important to wildlife and the world around us.
From colorful macaws and tree-dwelling sloths to reptiles and other fascinating species, there’s an entire world to discover during World Rainforest Week at AquaZoo!
Discover the Rainforest
What exactly makes a rainforest a rainforest?
Rainforests receive large amounts of rainfall and support incredibly diverse communities of plants and animals. These ecosystems are filled with life, with different species occupying areas ranging from the dark forest floor to the sunny treetops.
During World Rainforest Week, guests can learn more about rainforest ecosystems, biodiversity, animal adaptations, food webs, conservation, and the relationships between animals and their habitats.
It’s science you can see come to life!
Explore the Layers of the Rainforest
Did you know a rainforest can be divided into different layers?
Each layer receives different amounts of sunlight and provides different resources for wildlife.
Emergent Layer: The tallest trees rise above the rest of the forest and receive plenty of sunlight.
Canopy: A dense layer of leaves and branches where many rainforest animals spend much of their lives.
Understory: A darker, humid environment beneath the canopy where plants and animals have adapted to lower levels of sunlight.
Forest Floor: Very little sunlight reaches the ground, where decomposers help break down organic material and return nutrients to the ecosystem.
As you explore AquaZoo, think about where different rainforest animals might live and what adaptations help them survive there.
Meet Rainforest Animals at AquaZoo
World Rainforest Week is also an opportunity to take a closer look at some of AquaZoo’s incredible animal residents.
Guests can discover macaws, sloths, reptiles, and other species associated with rainforest habitats while learning how their bodies and behaviors help them survive.

Look closely and ask questions:
Why does a sloth have long, curved claws?
How does a macaw use its powerful beak?
Why might bright colors be helpful for some rainforest animals while camouflage is better for others?
How do reptiles use their surroundings to regulate their body temperature?
Every animal has adaptations that tell us something about how and where it lives.
Amazing Rainforest Adaptations
Living in a rainforest presents unique challenges. Animals need to find food, avoid predators, communicate, reproduce, and move through a habitat filled with dense vegetation.
Over generations, rainforest species have developed incredible adaptations.
Some animals have strong claws or gripping feet for climbing, while others use camouflage to blend into leaves and branches. Birds may have specialized beaks for accessing particular foods, and some species use bright colors or sounds to communicate.
These adaptations are a great reminder that an animal’s body, behavior, diet, and habitat are all connected.

During World Rainforest Week, see how many adaptations your family can spot!
Why Are Rainforests So Biodiverse?
One of the most fascinating things about rainforests is their biodiversity—the variety of living things found within an ecosystem.
Rainforests provide many different places to live and sources of food. Even within the same forest, conditions can vary dramatically between the forest floor and canopy.
Plants, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, fungi, and countless other organisms all play roles within these complex ecosystems.
Learning about biodiversity helps us understand an important lesson: every part of an ecosystem is connected.
Rainforests Are More Than Trees
When we think about rainforests, towering trees may be the first thing that comes to mind—but a healthy rainforest is an entire community.
Animals may pollinate plants, disperse seeds, control populations of other organisms, or become part of the food web themselves. Fungi and other decomposers recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.
Even something as simple as an animal eating a piece of fruit and carrying its seeds somewhere else can play a role in the life of the forest.
World Rainforest Week is an opportunity to explore these connections and see how individual species can contribute to an entire ecosystem.
Why Rainforest Conservation Matters
Rainforest animals depend on healthy habitats for food, shelter, water, and places to raise their young.
Habitat loss, pollution, wildlife trafficking, and other human pressures can affect rainforest ecosystems and the species that depend on them.
Learning about these challenges is an important first step toward conservation. It also helps us understand how everyday decisions can connect to wildlife and habitats far beyond our own communities.
At Hill City AquaZoo, we want guests to leave with more than a favorite animal—we want to encourage curiosity, understanding, and appreciation for wildlife and the natural world.
Turn Your AquaZoo Visit Into a Learning Adventure
World Rainforest Week is a great opportunity for families and young animal lovers to turn a day at AquaZoo into an educational adventure.
As you explore, challenge your family to:
Find an animal adapted for climbing
Spot an example of camouflage
Find a bird with a specialized beak
Identify an animal that spends time in trees
Discover what one rainforest animal eats
Ask a ZooCrew member about an animal adaptation
Choose an animal and determine which rainforest layer it might use
There’s something new to learn around every corner.
Educational Experiences for Kids and Families
Learning is part of every adventure at Hill City AquaZoo.
World Rainforest Week gives families an opportunity to explore topics kids may already be learning about in science—including habitats, ecosystems, adaptations, biodiversity, food webs, conservation, and animal behavior—while seeing real animals right in front of them.
It’s a great experience for families, homeschoolers, young animal enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to discover more about the natural world.
